When I first saw the trailer of the film there were two things that caught my attention. One, that Parineeti was portraying a very different character. There was something refreshing, real and crazy about it. The Second thing was the list of producers. When I first read it I was like, “what? Did I read it right?!” The list contained of four well known directors, namely Karan Johar, Vikram Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap.
I was surprised and curious to find out, that what was it that theses four names agreed upon, considering their individual styles are so different from one another.
I was excited!
But then I reminded myself what a disaster Shudh Desi Romance was and decided it was best to go with minimum expectations. -_-
But I was not disappointed this time. They delivered what they promised. They gave us a senti Nikhil (Sidharth Malhotra) and a mental Meeta (Parineeti Chopra). These two characters are the soul of the film. Why? Because contrary to what the society believes, Nikhil is a naughty yet sweet boy who believes that if two people have to make a relationship work, they have to compromise. He is aware of the fact that he is an “emotional dhakkan” and doesn’t shy away from expressing his fear of not being able to handle a break up. Meeta on the other hand is a complete tom boy in her appearance and the only one with a brain in the family. These two traits of hers are enough for her large family, to outcast her and treat her with minimum or rather no respect.
What is wonderful about the movie is that it makes you want to put yourself in the shoes of various characters and feel the emotions they are going through. You get to see a guy who is very sentimental, and thus functions according to what he feels and what he fears, and a girl who hardly cares for what her family and the society thinks or make of her as a person. She does what she believes in and doesn’t think twice about claiming what is her own.
So yes, we obviously know they get together in the end but the story is about how they come to find, that both of them are perfect for each other.
The dialogues are beautifully written complimenting the screenplay. The movie is shot in actual locations of Mumbai which provides authenticity to the story and for that Vinil Mathews deserves a big round of applause. Vishal-Shekhar have done a great job with the music of the film. It’s catchy and has a nice ring to it.
Sidharth and Parineeti both have done a great job but Parineeti steals the show. She is a performer all the way and the movie pretty much rides on her impeccable acting abilities. Special mention to Manoj Joshi, who plays Parineeti’s father in the film. He has a beautiful role in the film and has done full justice to it.
My only problem was that I din’t quite understand the title of the movie. It has no relevance to what the director is trying to convey. And, the movie could do with some more editing. It did feel like a drag in a few places.
Other than that yes it’s a cliché, yes it’s a pakka bollywood flick but, It’s the first day of the love week! If you are up for some romantic yet rational dose of love, go ahead.
Its worth a watch!
