Don’t you ever change they said, you have a heart of gold

A rare find, in this heartless world I was told

Let it not turn sour and bitter by the people around you

As the love you are capable of can only be found in a few

But never did I know it was a one way street

How naïve and childlike I have been, to be a victim of deceit

People are always going to praise your heart of gold

But the emotion is rarely returned to you, as they say, tenfold

How can I not change, when life has punished me for being fragile?

When I have always been nice while you sway between lovely and vile

But I see why my heart should remain the one that you can always depend on

Because it’s not me but you, who can change as often as dusk turns to dawn

I understand now that nothing really comes back to you

You would rather keep your expectations low, something I already knew

So I keep my heart of gold away from the world, undercover

In the hope that someone someday would be worth it’s discover
